A Day Exploring Identity

What an amazing day we had in Wellington today. Despite some trepidation about what was going to happen in our dance arts workshop, everyone enjoyed it and the Gallery staff all commented on the thoughtful insights our students had and how they enjoyed their enthusiasm.

To start with we looked at some video art screens, showing sets of triplets and twins sharing stories. We had to look for differences between them.
Identical triplets - can you see any differences?

Identical twins. What differences and similarities can you see?
We stopped to have a talk and play the 'same different' game with Claire. It was interesting to find out what similarities and differences we all had with each other.

We looked at the Thriller panels. Each of these was a person who loved Michael Jackson, performing their way though
the album Thriller. If we went up to each video panel we could hear each individual, but when
we were further away it was like a group singing.
So after looking at these we thought about individual identity and then how individuals form communities.

Here we are in the dance space upstairs starting to learn some moves.

After all our hard work thinking, viewing and dancing we got to head off outside for lunch, where we found...sports!! There was a soccer pitch in Civic Square for the U20 Fifa World Cup, so we watched and played and got to see some of the soccer players from around the world playing.

We met a wizard who says he grew up with Gandalf!

Marae Invitation

27th May 2015

Invitation to the South Wairarapa Super Whānau Advisory Group (SWSWAG)
Hurunui-o-Rangi Marae
Tuesday 2nd June
5.00pm (for a 5.30pm start) - 7.00pm

Kia ora koutou,
On the evening of Tuesday 2nd June there will be a powhiri (welcome) and hui (gathering) of families, parents, students, teachers, Board of Trustee members and Principals at Hurunui-o-Rangi Marae in Gladstone as part of the SWSWAG (Super Whānau South Wairarapa Advisory Group) initiative. Everyone from Gladstone School is invited and we really would love to see as many families turn up as possible to join in. The focus is to meet together and discuss ideas that can help our students learn in the best way possible in all South Wairarapa Schools.

Gladstone School is in a special position for this hui in that we are physically the closest school to the marae but also because many of the current marae whānau have learned at one of the contributing schools that make up Gladstone School. Because of this it is often mentioned that Gladstone School has a special place in the hearts of and connection to Hurunui-o-Rangi.

Our students have been invited to be part of the haka powhiri (the traditional welcome) on the marae for all of the visitors. This would mean that our students stand on the marae as tangata whenua (people who belong to this land) and perform haka and waiata in the powhiri. This is an honour for our students and we’d love for you to support them in this by helping them to get there on the night, and staying to participate, meeting some other families from other schools and see what it’s all about.

Interested students from Room 3, Room 6 and interested students from our previous Kapa Haka group will be practicing the haka and waiata for this occasion and it would be great to see as many Gladstone School students and whānau come along, as possible. There will be food, fun and possibly a few performances.

Please let me know if there are any questions you have about this event.

Naku noa, nā

Identity and music videos

Today we reviewed a blog post from a while ago to remind ourselves of the artists work we will look at this Friday on our class trip. This time we had to look at the video's and think about how the artist Candice Breitz is looking at people's IDENTITY throughout her work. We have posted our ideas above what identity could mean on the post Some THRILLING dancing . Could you maybe add some of your ideas to ours?

We are trying out a new app that could help the junior's with their blogging.

Writing today

20.05.2015

Today we tried to write using descriptive verbs. We did a self-check, a writing partner check and re-edited our work at the end. We have posted our writing to our blogs. Check them out!

W.A.L.T use descriptive verbs to describe an image.

We will know we can do this when:
  • we can identify what a verb is
  • we can use a descriptive verb instead of a boring one

Can you write a description to go with this image that include descriptive verbs?

We are learning how to post on our blogs

Today we are finishing creating our own learning blogs and finding out how to post on them.

How are we doing?

We have still been learning our sign language. We know we need a bit more practice but how do you think we're doing so far?

We are going to incorporate this into a music video so we need to record it in better lighting. Where do you think a good place for us to film would be?

A Fishy Problem

Today in maths we were trying to work out a fishy problem:

Millie has just got a new pet fish. The pet shop owner told her that she needs to put the fish into exactly one litre of water. The problem is she can only find three containers. One holds seven litres and the other two hold two litres. Can you use these three containers to put exactly one litre of water into the fish tank?

We've worked it out and now we want to know if you can too??

We'll show you what we've done to work it out later (we don't want to give you the answers too soon!!)

New Zealand Sign Language week

Did you know that this week is New Zealand Sign Language week?

As part of a bigger project we have going on in class at the moment we are learning how to 'sign' the New Zealand National Anthem. We have been watching this video and trying to do the same moves but in the opposite direction to the person we're watching.

Could you give it a go for NZSL week too?
