A Fishy Problem

Today in maths we were trying to work out a fishy problem:

Millie has just got a new pet fish. The pet shop owner told her that she needs to put the fish into exactly one litre of water. The problem is she can only find three containers. One holds seven litres and the other two hold two litres. Can you use these three containers to put exactly one litre of water into the fish tank?

We've worked it out and now we want to know if you can too??

We'll show you what we've done to work it out later (we don't want to give you the answers too soon!!)

  1. I'll give it a go .... not sure this is the fastest way but.

    1. Fill the 7 litre.
    2. Pour it into into the 2x 2 litre. You have 3 litre left in the 7 litre container

    3. Empty 1 2 litre container.
    4. What you have left in the 7 litre container tip into the 2 litre container and that should leave 1 litre for the fish.

    As an equation 7-2-2-2 =1

    Hows that ?

    1. Great work Gill. That's pretty much how we worked it out too. However we liked using the containers and actual water to test it.
