Homework

If any students are having trouble logging on to their google docs from home can you let me know? I will need you to write down the process you are going through to try the login so I can try to work out what's happening.

Google Docs

Today was a busy day in Room 3.

The whole school had a visit from BJ Bear and Nigel Kennedy the Magician this morning, telling us about the Clareville AMP Show. We are all amped up about going this weekend now.

Also, we learnt how to create and share a google doc today. This was good to learn because our homework now includes using a google doc to create some writing. It will be good practice for our new skills.

Drum Making Tips

Here are some sites you can visit to get ideas for drum making. Remember you need to have a drum and/or shaker ready by tomorrow!

Also . . .
Shakers can be made by putting stones, in side a can and taping it up or:

In the past I have used the balloon method on used baked beans cans. We put stones (or similar) inside so we could get three sounds: Hit it with a chopstick like a drum, shake it, or scrape the side with a chopstick to get a 'scrapy' sound.

Chopsticks or cut bamboo make good drumsticks.

Hockey Hockey Hockey

Room 3 and Room 2 have entered a competition to make a banner for the NZ Blacksticks vs. USA hockey friendlies this coming weekend at Clareville.  We are super proud of our efforts in Room 3. What do you think? If we win we get to have time with the Blacksticks!

More Vibrating Balloons

Carrying on from our last post about Vibrating Balloons that you can find here. We were asked a few questions by our parents about vibration using balloons, so we thought we'd try them out.
Here is Grace and Taylor checking out the water filled balloons.

Here is the question that started this off: "Very interesting way to measure sound Room 3. What if you put some water in the balloon?"

So we did. To start off with we tried to use our voices like we did in the plain balloons, to see if we could feel the vibrations

Sometimes we could. Then we noticed that we could see something happening to the water inside the balloons...it was vibrating and rippling when the sound waves hit the balloon. This was interesting to us and led to experimenting with different types of sound (clapping, didgeridoo, strange noises) to see how they would affect the balloons and water inside:
Lorenzo and Anika tried out two different balloon types

There was some questioning about balloon position to limit vibration from
other factors. Here they are trying the balloons on the grass.

We suspended the balloons from the handrails and tried it all out
with Charlie's didgeridoo.

Pet Day

It's been a corker of a day!  All of Room 3 shined while presenting their animals, bikes and sand trays today. But not just that, they handled themselves brilliantly, showing all of the Gladstone School values - ka rawe tamariki!

Here are some photos of Room 3's participation in today's events:

Vibrating Balloons

We Work Hard is the school mantra this week and in Room 3 we've gotten straight back into our work for the term.

Continuing on from the beginning of our unit on the science of sound that we started in Term 3, we discovered what sounds 'feels' like today using balloons, our voices and musical instruments.

Check out our discoveries below:
Taylor and Bella using vocal sounds to make the balloon vibrate

Charlie, Asha and Livvy found out how big the vibrations got using a didgereedoo

Foster, Hamish and Tessa giving it a go

Does it still work if we don't touch the balloon with our mouths?

Ollie and Leeroi used their biggest voices to create sound waves that transferred into vibrations

William, Josh and Liam tried it out too

What do you think they could hear in the balloon? Did it have anything to do with what
Lorenzo is doing?

Lily, Ella, Rachel and Anika discuss what is happening in their balloon

Taylor and Bella then tried out transferring sound using the tin can telephones.
Do you think it worked?

How far away can you hold the balloon and still feel sound vibrations?
