Training for different sports

We were really lucky to have Mr Klue come in today and set the hall up like a gym. We got to ask heaps of questions for our PE Inquiry projects and also found out about plenty of equipment that can be used to train for speed, skill, stamina, suppleness and strength.
We were all watching carefully

This looked like lots of fun

Kai Tahi - notice for parents

Taonga Takaro Kai Tahi
Wednesday 29th June
11.30am - 12.30pm

Kia ora koutou,

We have been fortunate to have Katarina Te Tau leading our learning in Taonga Takaro (traditional Māori games) this term. Katarina has taught us the whakapapa (the story of where they came from) of each game and we have really enjoyed playing them all. Taonga Takaro has taught us skills in agility, speed, co-ordination and rhythm.

When Katarina started with us she gave our classes a wero (a challenge) to re-create our favourite dishes with a healthy twist or to come up with a recipe for a new healthy food. She has asked us to think about eating seasonally as this is what fuels our bodies best for its needs in different seasons.

The end of this unit is coming this Wednesday 29th June where we will have a Kai Tahi (a feast together). Each student is asked to bring to school their re-created or new healthier dish for a shared lunch. We have the hall kitchen to heat food but do not want to cook things from scratch on the day. If students bring a dish that needs re-heated we can accommodate that.

Some examples of re-created or healthier options are: making spaghetti bolognese with zoodles instead of pasta, or using brown rice instead of white in sushi.

Parents and caregivers are invited to come along and share our kai tahi with us. We’d love to see you and share this learning with you.

Feel free to contact us if you have any further questions.

Matariki at the Marae

Rawe! What an amazing day we all had at Hurunui-o-Rangi Marae yesterday. The students have engaged in a day celebrating Matariki (Māori New Year) through a range of medium. Check out the photos below to see everyone in action.
Ella, Rachel and Ollivia making whetu (stars) our of harakeke.

Kayla, Maisie and Persia learning some sewing skills from Matua Ron.

One of our new favourite games, Poi Patu, where we get to legally whack each other! Ask your child about it.

The whetu that students wove were hung on a harakeke teepee to display for the exhibition.
Although many didn't make it...the students loved them so much they had to take them home with them.

With Matua Ron we created a large Whakapapa Quilt that told the story of the taniwha Ngarara-huarau,
and the seven sisters of Matariki.

The quilt is away getting the finishing touches added and will come back to live at Gladstone School.

Students also made Manu Aute or Manu Tukutuku, which are traditional Māori
kites that are flown at Matariki.

They used raupō (bullrush) and harakeke (flax) to weave these.

One of the Manu Tukutuku completed.
Ruby using some of her new found hand stitching skills to work on the quilt.

Nanny Frances told the students stories of Hurunui-o-Rangi Marae and the surrounding area.
Thanks to all of the tutors: Nanny Frances, Matua Ron, Whaea Jade and Waiaria; also thanks to all the parents who came along to join in: Trish Edwards, Kat Wildy, Sue Butcher, Lara Ferguson and Tania Castle.

Matariki at the Marae

Matariki at the Marae 14th June 2016 Hurunui-o-Rangi Marae

9 June 2016

Kia ora koutou,

Next week we will be spending Tuesday the 14th of June 2016 at Hurunui-o-Rangi Marae for the day to support our learning surrounding Matariki (Māori New Year). The day will include activities for the students which include storytelling (pūrakau), weaving (raranga), traditional Māori games (taonga takaro), kite making (manu tukutuku) and creating a whakapapa quilt with fabric artist Ron Te Kawa.

We are fortunate to have several very skilled tutors coming to support our learning on this day and would like to extend an invitation to any parents or caregivers who want to come along and join in with us, to please do so. The day will start with a powhiri at 9am, which would be essential to be included in as a visitor to the marae and then after you would be welcome to come and go as you needed.

For the whakapapa quilt that will be created we will need further support from any parents who are willing to bring their sewing machine and help Matua Ron sew the pieces the students create together. Could you please indicate to your child’s teacher if you are able to help us with this.

Also we will need any fabric scraps or pieces you are willing to donate to the project. These can be any kinds of fabric and any sizes. Also any thread, buttons or sundry bits and pieces that you might be able to spare would be helpful. We will take any pieces donated from now onwards at school.

We will be taking buses to and from the marae. The bus will leave at 8.55am so it important for students to be at school on time on this day.

The cost for this EOTC experience will be $16.60 per student and this will be added to student accounts.

Rugby 7s

A great effort put in by all of our Rugby 7's players today at the Greytown Rugby grounds. Our Year 7/8 team showed guts and determination and with limited subs still came in 4th on the leaderboard. People on the sideline were heard mentioning the teams support of each other. Great stuff guys!
(Leeroi, Henry, Josh, Lily, Foster, Charlotte, and Ollie)

Our Year 5/6 team played strongly and won their grade bringing a beautiful cup back to school (very proudly). Well done to all players who put in their best efforts today.
(Dylan, Hamish, Winky, Ruby, Conall, Joel, Charlie, Angus and Billy)

Big shout out to Liam who held down the tough job of linesman and did a stirling effort with it!

Here are some photos shared on the Greytown Rugby Club page:
