Kai Tahi - notice for parents

Taonga Takaro Kai Tahi
Wednesday 29th June
11.30am - 12.30pm

Kia ora koutou,

We have been fortunate to have Katarina Te Tau leading our learning in Taonga Takaro (traditional Māori games) this term. Katarina has taught us the whakapapa (the story of where they came from) of each game and we have really enjoyed playing them all. Taonga Takaro has taught us skills in agility, speed, co-ordination and rhythm.

When Katarina started with us she gave our classes a wero (a challenge) to re-create our favourite dishes with a healthy twist or to come up with a recipe for a new healthy food. She has asked us to think about eating seasonally as this is what fuels our bodies best for its needs in different seasons.

The end of this unit is coming this Wednesday 29th June where we will have a Kai Tahi (a feast together). Each student is asked to bring to school their re-created or new healthier dish for a shared lunch. We have the hall kitchen to heat food but do not want to cook things from scratch on the day. If students bring a dish that needs re-heated we can accommodate that.

Some examples of re-created or healthier options are: making spaghetti bolognese with zoodles instead of pasta, or using brown rice instead of white in sushi.

Parents and caregivers are invited to come along and share our kai tahi with us. We’d love to see you and share this learning with you.

Feel free to contact us if you have any further questions.
