Matariki at the Marae

Matariki at the Marae 14th June 2016 Hurunui-o-Rangi Marae

9 June 2016

Kia ora koutou,

Next week we will be spending Tuesday the 14th of June 2016 at Hurunui-o-Rangi Marae for the day to support our learning surrounding Matariki (Māori New Year). The day will include activities for the students which include storytelling (pūrakau), weaving (raranga), traditional Māori games (taonga takaro), kite making (manu tukutuku) and creating a whakapapa quilt with fabric artist Ron Te Kawa.

We are fortunate to have several very skilled tutors coming to support our learning on this day and would like to extend an invitation to any parents or caregivers who want to come along and join in with us, to please do so. The day will start with a powhiri at 9am, which would be essential to be included in as a visitor to the marae and then after you would be welcome to come and go as you needed.

For the whakapapa quilt that will be created we will need further support from any parents who are willing to bring their sewing machine and help Matua Ron sew the pieces the students create together. Could you please indicate to your child’s teacher if you are able to help us with this.

Also we will need any fabric scraps or pieces you are willing to donate to the project. These can be any kinds of fabric and any sizes. Also any thread, buttons or sundry bits and pieces that you might be able to spare would be helpful. We will take any pieces donated from now onwards at school.

We will be taking buses to and from the marae. The bus will leave at 8.55am so it important for students to be at school on time on this day.

The cost for this EOTC experience will be $16.60 per student and this will be added to student accounts.
