Proverbs

One of the reading groups this week is reading a story called 'The Proverb Bandit'.  We didn't know much about proverbs before reading this and we still aren't sure what some of them mean.  Can anyone help us with what these ones from the story mean?

  • Birds of a feather flock together.
  • The pen is mightier than the sword.
  • Every dog has its day.
  • Cast not your pearls before swine.
  • A rolling stone gathers no moss.
  • Never put all your eggs in one basket.
  • Make hay while the sun shines.
  • Strike while the iron's hot!
  • A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
What do they mean? And do you know any others that we could work out?

  5. The one I remember most (My mum knew all of them) is Make hay while the sun shines.
This means ... make the most of something. eg. play your best at hockey because you only get to play it twice a week. Anika

Do you know any proverbs that aren't listed on here? Maybe a whakatauki that you like?

    2. Kia Ora Ruma Toru,

My favourite whakatauki that I use in my work is ....
      Manaaki whenua,
      Manaaki tangata,
      Haere whakamua.

      Care for the land
      Care for the people
      Go forward.

Which sums up for me the important stuff in life.

      Nga mihi mahana,
      Gill

PS Ra has got heaps of them - he would be good to ask what his favourite one was.

  8. A rolling stone gathers no moss means you don't stop.Like if you were they stone and you didn't stop rolling you can't gather any moss,if you were the stone and you weren't rolling you would gather moss.So mainly it says you don't at something.
