  1. Cancer Society (Daffodil Day) - The money donated supports people with cancer but also gives them the feeling of hope with the beautiful and joyful atmosphere of the daffodils.
Conservation week - environmental issues - is when people tidy up the community and share ideas about conservation.

    1. Daffodil Day and Conservation week are both great examples of communal events where the participants don't all have to be in the same place at the same time Great thinking Natasha!
In what different ways do you think 'tidying up the community' promotes well-being in a community?

  2. Rumahanga Ramblers are a social Wairarapa running group. Sometimes children and adults run. People are running for fitness but also for fun and to meet other people which makes them feel good. They run on the road and sometimes on farms and enjoy running outside and seeing different places.

    1. Excellent choice of communal event James. I like that you have told me that the events 'makes them feel good' which is one part of well-being. Can you think of another?

  3. Huri Huri (Wairarapa's Bike Festival) is a celebration of all things biking!
Held in conjunction with the Women's International Cycle Tour of New Zealand from the 14th to the 22nd of February.
Admiral Hill Peloton Picnic - Saturday 21 February:
A family picnic day on Admirals Hill, Gladstone. Come and enjoy some of the best views in the Wairarapa and be part of the crowd to watch the world’s best female road cyclists compete for points to secure their place at the Rio Olympics. A series of road cycling races will finish with the massive grind up Admirals Hill. Kids and adult events, music and great views. Dress up and chase the cyclists up the hill, cheering them all the way.
Huri Huri is good for the community because it brings people together and biking is a good exercise.

    1. This is a fantastic example of a communal event. I like that you said it helps for people with Cancer to know that others care. This creates well-being in a community. Do you know anyone who will be taking part this year?

  7. Wairarapa Balloon Festival - it makes people feel happy because they are seeing these amazing balloons in our sky and it makes the pilots feel proud
to show off their balloons and skills and to be part of this event.

    1. I like this example Foster because it's coming up this term, so we will all be able to enjoy it soon. It certainly makes people feel happy, that is a great way that it promotes well-being. How do you think it makes the Wairarapa, as an area, feel to know they have a world class balloon festival? What do you think people from outside of the area feel about our Balloon Festival.

  8. Auckland 175 years anniversary. There were free public events we went too when we were in Auckland. The HMS Otago Navy ship we went around it. We saw the junior cabin and the gym, like all the things the navy does. And that night we went to Mt Eden and sat on the hill eating sorbet and watched the big fireworks display around Auckland. It made people happy and proud to be an Aucklander. It cost nothing so anyone could join in which was good .

    1. I like this idea Hamish because it describes a communal event that can be as big or as small as the participants want it to be. Your comment that it made people feel happy and proud to be Aucklanders decribed to me how the event promoted well-being in a community that is very spread out and made up of lots of different types of people. Great thinking!

  9. The Gladstone School Scarecrow Fair. This helps the community get together and helps raise money for Gladstone School so we can buy things that help us learn. It also has a fun run/walk that gets people involved physically.

    1. Excellent choice of events to highlight Joel. I like that you know the money goes back in to your learning. So do you think this is one of the reasons it promotes well-being? You've also mentioned people's physical health. Great thoughts!

    1. I really like that you've brought up this example Anika. Funeral's and tangi definitely promote well-being in a community. I think about how I feel comforted by other people grieving at the same time as me at these sad times and how we can help each other. Great example!

  11. In our community, we often have the Gladstone Top Road. All the people who live on the roads in Gladstone make a team for each road and compete in lots of fun events against each other. Adults and kids both compete, and everybody gets involved. It is really competitive and everybody cheers their own team on. As well as being lots of fun, it's a really good chance for people to catch up and meet new people in the community. It's good for people to belong to community.

    1. What an excellent example of a communal event that is HomeGrown! Your answer was well thought out Billy, you've described several examples of well-being that have come out of this event, like cheering on people (being positively supportive), having fun (enjoyment), meeting new people or catching up with old friends (creating community spirit) belonging to a community (we call this tangata whenuatanga - knowing where you belong and enjoying things in that place).
