Some THRILLING Dancing...

Our Inquiry Learning is taking off! This term we have a few plans (that we won't share with you just yet) but they do revolve around Dance.

We started today by looking at the work of artist Candice Breitz
“Candice Breitz (born 1972, Johannesburg) is a South African artist who works primarily in video and photography. She currently lives in Berlin, and has been a professor at the Braunschweig University of Art since 2007. Breitz uses found video footage, appropriating video from popular culture.” (Wikipedia)

We watched her piece titled 'King: A Portrait of Michael Jackson'

It was interesting watching all of the different people's reactions and responses to the music. We wondered why the lady in the pink and the one in the white looked so nervous.

We also watched this video which was at the end of the movie 'Boy'. If you haven't seen the movie, then it's helpful to know that a love of Michael Jackson features highly in it.
"This is a mash-up of Thriller and Poi E, a New Zealand hit song which was originally created with the intention of teaching young Maori to be proud of being Maori in a format that they were comfortable with." (City Gallery)

There are heaps of remakes of Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' music video. I wonder why it has been remade so many times? Maybe you could put your answer in the comments.

Here is another remake:

Which remake was your favourite?

  28. Identity - what a big question !! I think your identity is made up of who you were born to ... the history of your family and the places that might have shaped your family. It is made up by what you have experienced in your life - the good and the bad. It is also made up from the personality that you were born with.

eg. I was born and grew up in the South Island - and that is a part of me - I feel proud of the South Island - the mountains and rivers and lakes. The ones I have climbed ... skied on ... swam in .... boated on. I was born to families that have been farmers in the past and people who have had strong beliefs - so that is part of who I am. I love sport and I am fairly quiet but I love being with people - so that is part of who I am. I think what I look like is only a very tiny part of my identity but people can think they know me from it but they don't.

    1. Thanks for your thoughts Gill and you're right...it is a big question! We're just getting going on thinking about it. I like your ideas that say that your experiences as a child and where you grew up feed into your identity. We call that tangata whenuatanga. Your identity has been shaped by the land you have grown up on. Does anyone else feel like 'who they are' is linked to the place they have grown up?

  29. Interesting answers everyone and all great contributions - The Usborne Dictionary defines identity as "who you are". I think of identity as who I am on the inside and outside. It's possibly easier for adults to think of our inside identity because by the time we are adults we have a better idea of who we are, we sort of have it a bit more figured out. Maybe for children its easier to think of your identity as who/ what you look like. Any children agree or have another idea? Hoping everyone enjoys Friday :-)

  30. identity means what makes you - you. like I have brown hair brown eyes . I like surfing and rugby that's me. and my favourite is the shrek one because its funny taking movie characters into a real song that wasn't made up by them.

    1. So you identify as a brown haired, brown eyed, surfer who plays rugby?! Those are good thoughts. Does identity stretch to other parts of people I wonder? Can you think of any others?

  31. This is Trish on Hamish's account ...... we are talking about identity and I asked Hamish what do you think describes my identity and he said ...... you like cooking, you help in the community ( I have just finished baking and making a dinner to give to another person), you help at school, and do the lunches. So I think Hamish knows me really well as a person who gives and does things for others. Which is a big part of my identity.

    1. What a great answer Trish. Isn't it nice that Hamish notices the good things you do for him and others around you. I'm interested in the idea that identity can be both 'how we see ourselves' and 'how others see us'.
